Ganfeng Lithium wants a third partner for its Pozuelos-Pastos Grandes joint venture in Salta Province, Argentina. The move signals growing confidence in one of South America's largest lithium projects, which targets 150,000 tonnes per annum of lithium carbonate equivalent and carries a development cost of roughly $1.24 billion.

Ganfeng's existing JV partner, Switzerland-based Lithium Argentina, is pushing alongside it on two financing fronts: offtake agreements and minority equity stakes. Both structures serve the same logic. They distribute project risk while keeping future customers and strategic allies in the room, a useful hedge when capital costs are this large.

Salta Province sits at the heart of Argentina's lithium triangle, a region holding some of the world's densest brine reserves. For battery supply chain players, a fully capitalized PPG project means meaningful new volumes arriving at a moment when automakers and cell manufacturers are scrambling to lock in long-term supply. Minority equity is especially attractive to downstream buyers who want secured feed material without absorbing full construction risk. Layering offtake agreements on top can reduce financing costs further.

A third investor also broadens the project's geopolitical spread. Governments across Europe and North America are actively working to diversify away from concentrated lithium sources, and a new partner could accelerate permitting and strengthen balance sheets before construction decisions are finalized. Lithium Argentina's May 2026 SEC filing confirms both parties are already in active discussions with potential counterparties. Demand for lithium is forecast to climb sharply through the decade, and projects at this scale will not wait long for takers.
