INNOVATION
Argentina targets 409,000 tonnes LCE annually by 2030, a 157% capacity jump, as eight new lithium projects are set for commissioning.

Argentina is about to reshape the global lithium map. Mining Secretary Luis Lucero has confirmed plans to commission eight new projects by 2030, pushing national production capacity to 409,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent per year. That's a 157% jump from projected 2026 output of 159,000 tonnes, and it signals a government that isn't waiting for the clean-energy transition to come to it.
Two projects are expected online first. Rio Tinto's 60,000-tonne-per-year operation leads the wave, followed by Galán Lithium's 9,500-tonne-per-year facility, which represents a significant domestic stake in the country's famously lithium-rich salt flats. Together, they anchor a pipeline that extends well beyond any single deposit or foreign partner.
For battery makers and EV producers, the timing is hard to ignore. Global lithium demand is forecast to outpace supply through the late 2020s, and sourcing pressures have rattled supply chains more than once in recent years. Eight new Argentine commissions won't fix everything, but they would add meaningful supply at exactly the right moment to take some heat off prices.
None of this is accidental. Argentina already ranks among the world's top three lithium producers, and Lucero's announcement reflects a deliberate push to attract capital, cut permitting delays, and deliver projects on a faster schedule than most resource-rich nations have managed. Eight commissions in under five years is genuinely difficult. Getting there requires political consistency as much as geological luck.
Businesses dependent on battery-grade lithium now have a clearer read on South American supply through the decade. If Argentina's schedule holds, the prize is real: more stable pricing, reduced volatility, and stronger long-term confidence for manufacturers scaling clean-energy production globally.
